Two volumes, complete. Original brown blindstamped decorative cloth, gilt title and decoration to spine, patterned endpapers with publisher's advertisements, (8 x 5.25 inches). First Edition. xii, 308; vii, 328 pages, with a vocabulary of Indian dialects rear of volume two. One of the few first person accounts of the fur trade in the early 19th century. It remains an important source for historians. Sabin 43514: "Depicts with great fidelity and vivacity the manners and condition, the toils, privations, and perils of the Indian hunters. It also includes several interesting geographical and geological facts and Indian vocabularies." Field 996: "Much the largest portion is devoted to the narration of incidents of travel among the Indians of the territory." Lande 1322: "Faithful picture of the Indian trader's life." Streeter sale 3712: "In a very entertaining style, M'Lean tells just how the Hudson Bay Company operated. The author entered service with the company in 1821 and spent the next eleven or twelve years in their stations in Ontario, on the Ottawa River, at Le Chate, and at Fort Coulonge. He then traveled west to Fort St. James on Stuart's lake in British Columbia. Later he served in Labrador and as far north as Fort Good Hope."
