"A CLASSIC BOOK ON AMERICA" (Borba de Moraes). Montanus's narrative contains a wealth of maps and illustrations of North and South America. The North American section contains versions of Blaeu's map of New England and New Netherland, as well as versions of the John Smith Virginia and Carolina maps. there is also a detailed map of Bermuda, and numerous views of cities and scenes in Mexico and the Caribbean. Much of the second half of the volume is devoted to Brazil, where the Dutch were deeply involved for decades in the 17th century. Among the text engravings is one of the first views of New Amsterdam (p. 124), which G. M. Asher described in his Bibliographical Essay as "without any doubt, the handsomest, and … the most agreeable view of Dutch New York." Howes praised the illustrations for their "beauty and wealth of copperplates comparable only to De Bry."
