Morocco (spine and corners red, boards green), gilt arms on front board and device on rear board, gilt bees on front corners, 3 7 cm x 28 cm,spine gilt, all edges gilt, green moire endpapers, [4], 692 pp, frontispiece of Museum, portrait, 42 facsimile The scarce catalogue of an extraordinary collection of memorabilia, artworks and materials relating to Napoleon and French history after Louis XIV, assembled by the Napoleonic sympathizer John Sainsbury and exhibited in the early 1840s in London at his 'Napoleon Museum'. While personal relics of Napoleon were few, there was an imposing inventory of State Papers and Manuscripts, Marbles, Bronzes, Carvings, Gems, Decorations, Medallions, Drawings, Miniatures, Portraits, Pictures, Prints, Vignettes, Coins, Medals, Books, etc . The Duke of Wellington came to the show and expressed his "surprise and satisfaction" and his intention of paying a return visit. Sainsbury claimed to have spent over £40,000 on his collection and ended up in financial distress- the collection was dispersed at auction realizing only a tiny fraction of what he had paid. Bookplate on front pastedown endpaper of Edward King Tenison (1805 1878, Irish politician and early practitioner of photography), several small scrapes and scuffs to covers, binding sound and firm, some foxing (most noticeably on the frontispiece and its tissue-guard, the title-page and plate I and occasionally elsewhere), but contents generally clean with a very few light pencil marks or notes, a Good copy of a scarce item.
