Limited edition of 450 numbered sets. 6 vols, including 2 vols facsimile full tooled calf in suede saddlebags with ties, 3 other vols in publisher's cloth-backed boards, maps in publisher's cloth-backed solander case, prospectus in printed self-wrappers. various foliations, 28 maps. A splendid set of the finest facsimile of Great Domesday Book, complete with comprehensive translation, map and index volumes, and a copy of the publisher's prospectus. The high-quality photographic colour reproduction of the 11th century manuscript is printed on custom-produced imitation parchment and very attractively bound in 2 volumes which replicate the earliest extant Domesday binding (the Winton Domesday, one of only 13 surviving English Romanesque bindings), in full brown tooled calf, each volume having a protective suede saddlebag. A full translation of the manuscript is provided in two quarter-linen folio volumes. This translation is the first to follow the arrangement of the folios of Great Domesday Book itself, having been designed for use with the facsimile as a parallel text, column for column. A matching solander case holds a comprehensive set of 28 Ordnance Survey maps (covering 33 counties) on which all identified Domesday sites have been overlaid. A final volume - again a quarter-linen folio - provides an introduction to Domesday Book and comprehensive indexes to the facsimile and translation. A copy of the publisher's prospectus completes the set. This Millennium Edition of Great Domesday Book was priced new at GBP 6,750. The photography for the facsimile took place over a full year while Great Domesday Book was disbound for conservation - it is unlikely that any other facsimile could match or surpass the Millennium Edition for the forseeable future. A Fine set - just slight fading to the suede saddlebags, an unobtrusive stain to the top edge of the map box, very minor signs of handling / fingersoiling to the cloth-bound volumes and prospectus and very slight rubbing to the leather-bound volumes.
