Descripción

Descripción:

ÒEmerson [1701-1782] was an English mathematician who devoted himself entirely to studious retirement and published many works which are singularly free from errata. In mechanics he never advanced a proposition which he had not previously tested in practice, nor published an invention without first proving its effects by a modelÓ (quoted in Babson, Newton Catalogue Supplement, p. 10). His texts, beginning with the Doctrine of Fluxions (1749), were widely used in the eighteenth century. Small quarto. viii, 147, [1] pp. Contemporary calf, rebacked to style. Contemporary ink ownership signature on title-page, another ownership signature dated 1904. Old booksellerÕs label on front pastedown. Marginal tear in Mm1, just a hint of foxing. A very good, clean copy. First edition. N° de ref. del artículo 17481
