Corners bumped. Robert R. Compton was a professor of geology at Stanford University. Observing and collecting data and samples; Using the compass, clinometer, and hand level; The compass traverse; Plotting geologic features on a base map; Mapping geologic features on aerial photographs; The Alidade and Plane Table, Control for Geologic Maps; Geologic Mapping with the Alidade and Plane Tables; Making a Geologic Map for Aerial Photographs, Detailed Mapping and Sampling; Preparing Geologic Reports; Field Work with Sedimentary Rocks; Field Work with Volcanic Rocks; Field Work with Igneous and Igneous-Appearing Plutonic Rocks and Field Works with Metamorphic Rocks. Robert R. Compton was born in 1922 in Pasadena California. He attended Stanford University and studied Geology, receiving his Ph.D. in 1944 after which he became a professor of Geology at Stanford. He created and lead summer field geology courses that were held in California, Nevada, and Utah. This is a classic manual. Much of the content has not changed but some advances have occurred since first published. Nevertheless, practitioners in the field consider this work to be "rock solid". Describes the methods, procedures, and specialized equipment of field work in geology and includes a guide to making maps of specific areas. A guide to advances in the increasingly broad and interpretive discipline of formation mapping theory. Thorough, yet compact enough for use in the field, it consists of brief descriptions of textures and structures useful in interpreting depositional environments, kinds of volcanic activity, and plutonic events and conditions. Included are procedures often reserved for the laboratory or office: staining rocks, correcting orientations of current indicators, constructing profile sections of folds, measuring strains, making photogeologic interpretations, and more. Covers pre-field considerations, methods of observation and measurement, recognition of key geologic features, and preparation of a report. Illustrated with composite drawings.
