In good condition. Original leather binding is soft, rich in color. Spine has been rebacked, but attractively. Six compartment spine in nice skate with light cracking along hinges. Gilt work bright and clean. Red morocco leather label in nice shape. Boards show typical scuffing, edge wear, lightly crushed corners. Front hinge slightly tender. Erwin Tomash book plate on front paste down. Interior clean and bright. Minimal toning & foxing. Pen note in old hand on rear paste down. Fold out plates in remarkably great condition. Minimal offsetting. All in good, working order. Binding remains tight and intact. Please see photos. Rare first edition quarto. many later editions bound in octavo. Fanatic plates. James Ferguson was a Scottish astronomer. He is known as the inventor and improver of astronomical and other scientific apparatus, as a striking instance of self-education, and as a itinerant lecturer. Almost entirely self-taught, he became fascinated with mechanics as a small child when he observed his father using a lever. He invented eight orreries, a tide-dial, a whirling table for displaying modes of central forces, the mechanical paradox and various kinds of astronomical clocks, and stellar and lunar rotulas. Bookplate removed and replaced with that of Erwin Tomash (1921-2012). Tomash was an American engineer who co-founded Dataproducts Corporation, which specialized in computer technology, specifically printers and core memory units. Tomash led the creation of the Charles Babbage Institute and is responsibly for the Adele and Erwin Tomash Fellowship in History of Information Technology and the Erwin Tomash Library.
