" This little book of sketches is the product of a keen and loving memory of childhood days. Many children born a generation later than that of which the author writes have not had the joy of the stable, the gaiety of the four in hand and its accompanying horn or even the supreme delight of the little Shetland pony and cart. These sentences from the foreword suggest not only the matter but the quality of these pictures from the nineties and early nineteen-hundreds: the children and their parents , the animals and old family servants bring back the very flavor of those more free and spacious days.
