xxii + 353 pp, 3 folding plates. Illustrated with engraved initials, a number of text engravings, as well as a large plate at page 1 and headers and footers. Red and black title page. With a handwritten letter in Italian dated February 10, 1753, that appears to be an obituary of Marangoni. In Italian. In what appears to be the original vellum binding with title in gold on a yellow background at the spine. Binding is sturdy, vellum is normally aged, long stain on spine below the title, bottom edge of front and to a lesser extent the back covers are eroded and stained -- it appears the book came in contact with a corrosive liquid that darkened and then "burned" the vellum. The stains, "burning" and erosion continues on the interior, although most of the erosion is on the first and last few blanks but the dark staining on the edges is throughout. The staining and darkening continues on the folding plates -- the plate "Prospetto" has a dark mark at the top and then a longer mark with some cracking in the lower center. The magnificent large plate showing Benedict received the staining at the lower fold, which corresponds to the center of the plate, with consequent staining and cracking. The smaller folding plate of San Salvatori escaped whatever liquid attacked the book. The interior staining is limited to the edges and is in the margins, not the text. Otherwise the pages are clean and unmarked, normal age-darkening and foxing, a light bit of humidity staining at the rear, everything is present. Institutional stamp at inside back cover. Marangoni was n Italian antiquarian, historian, philologist and theologian. He composed his historical works after moving to Rome where he began his collaboration with Canon Boldetti who was responsible for archaeological excavations of the Roman underground. This fascinating research gave impulse to Marangoni's penchant for municipal history. According to the handwritten obituary in the book, Maragoni died on a Wednesday morning in 1753 at a monastery dedicated to St. Jerome, where he had retired, somewhat troubled by illness and age. The obituary concludes: "he was famous for the many erudite works he composed and brought to light". The book is very scarce in commerce, with only 2 auction records in the last 50 years. While this copy is somewhat hurt, it is still attractive and informative. Priced to reflect condition.
