Marriott, Crittenden. The Isle of Dead Ships. Philadelphia & London: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1909. First edition. Octavo, pp. [1-2] [1-4] 5-265 [266: blank] [267-272: publisher's ads]. Original pictorial navy blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in orange and green. Illustrated by Frank McKernan with four inserted plates, one in color, title page printed in black and red. Label on front paste-down identifies this as from Tracy's Circulation Library, as does a small mark on p. 7; no other ex-library stigmata. A touch of rubbing to spine ends, a very good copy overall. This first edition is rather uncommon, unlike the less attractive 1925 reprint. #3328. $75. Adventure novel set in the Sargasso Sea with fantastic elements including sea monsters and a submarine. Marginally lost race, as some of the ships have been lashed together to form an impromptu island of sorts, ruled by a tyrant. Criminous and romantic subplots keep the action bubbling along. The illustrations are quite good. Locke and Teitler, By the World Forgot #825 (noting the novel's debt to the very amusing 1896 novel, Missing, by Julius Chambers). "Silly shopgirl sentimentalism." -- Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1440. Clareson, Science Fiction in America 1870s-1930s 534. Reginald 09683. N° de ref. del artículo 3328
