In the last year of World War II, a girl is found amid the rubble of a German city. All she knows is her first name: Rebecca. The authorities ship her to an orphanage, but along the way, when her train is stopped by an air raid, she flees to a cornfield. This is a remarkable book, both in its treatment of wartime reality and of alternate fantasy worlds.
