London, octavo, xi, 156 p., 12 plates (4 double-page chromolithographs), text figures, errata slip, and 16 p. of publisher's ads, dated July 1, 1873. ***CONTENT: John T. Moggridge (1842-1874) was a British entomologist, arachnologist and botanist, notable for his perceptive observational skills as well as his artistic abilities. This volume, one of his scarcer works, has two sections: Part I is on harvester ants, and Part II describes trap-door spiders. The volume provides anatomical and taxonomic details, as well as information on behavior, reproduction, feeding, nest-building, habitat, and much more. The double-page, colored plates of trap-door spiders are most striking! ***CONDITION: This is a complete, VG copy bound in the original navy blue pebbled cloth, with a gilt vignette on the front cover and bright, bold gilt titles on the backstrip. The covers are clean and sound, but mildly worn at the extremities. Joints and hinges just starting, but strong; binding firm. Text pages fresh, clean and bright, but roughly opened in a couple of places; light foxing to two color plates. ***PROVENANCE: This copy bears the holograph signature "A.S. Packard, 1873" on the first free endpaper, as well as a presentation bookplate to Bowdoin College on the front pastedown. Library blindstamp on title page and elsewhere. Alpheus Spring Packard, Jr. (1839-1905) was an eminent American entomologist and paleontologist who described more than 500 new species, mostly butterflies and moths. A most entertaining, informative treatise. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost. N° de ref. del artículo OG5499
