From the Preface: The service of the Regiment was varied. It served on land and water. Much of its time was spent on gunboats, transports and flatboats. It served in Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. It was often engaged independent of other regiments. It was in active service nearly four years, and with many of its original members as officers. The 46th Indiana conducted most of its operations along the Mississippi River and the other rivers and streams forming tributaries, including the Arkansas, White, and Yazoo Rivers. The 46th had engagements at New Madrid, Ft. Pillow, Champion Hill, Vicksburg, and Sabine Cross Roads. Additionally, they conducted counter-guerilla operations and participated in the ill-fated Red River Campaigning, suffering significant losses. Captured at Sabine Cross Roads, this important narrative includes information on prison camps in Texas, including Camp Ford and Camp Groce and other locations, escapes, and prison conditions. Descriptions of Texas camps are seldom provided. This scarce Indiana regimental history, not often offered for sale, is here in near fine condition. REFERENCES: DORN IN#129.
