In fair condition. Boards are worn, with rubbing to edges and corners. Minor loss at corners. Hinges tender with slight cracking and red rot. Top of spine is missing, exposing boards. Bottom spine extreme nearly missing as well. Spine label chipped, but intact. Old hand signature dated 1818 on front fly leaf. Interior toned with moderate toning and staining throughout. Some pages are severely toned, affecting text. Free of known markings. Spotting throughout. Binding remains intact. Second rear fly leaf torn at bottom right corner. Please see photos. Very scarce 1st American Edition. published while Cobbett was on Long Island. The first issue of 5,000 copies (7 December 1818) was sold out in two weeks. A second edition of 5,000 copies followed Jan. 4th, 1819. Cobbett lived for two years on a farm on Long Island, where he wrote Grammar of the English Language and with help from William Benbow, a friend from London, continued to issued the Political Register.
