A slightly tired hardback first edition (see images) in the publisher's original dark green boards, with gilt decoration and title lettering to upper cover. Collated and complete (the illustrations within the volume do not appear in the order in which they are shown in the List of Illustrations, but they are all present, as are the 5 maps, some of which are folding). There is a bit of rubbing at the head and tail of the spine, and some cracking and fraying to the joint on the upper cover (the binding remains secure). Both the front and rear endpapers are a bit marked (I have pictured the front free endpaper, which is representative). The contents are clean and complete, apart from some light spotting to a few pages. Overall, a decent hardback first edition but with some shelf wear. Published in 1885.
