First edition, first printing of this Dr. Seuss classic, the world's introduction to the menace of Whoville who learns the true meaning of Christmas. A symbol of resistance to the commercialization of the holidays, THE GRINCH is second perhaps only to THE CAT IN THE HAT in terms of Seuss character recognition. The 1966 Chuck Jones animated adaptation of THE GRINCH, with a delightfully devious theme sung by Thurl Ravenscroft, cemented the green grump's place in the US Christmas canon, and was the first of various TV shows, musicals, and Hollywood films to feature the story brought to life. A lovely copy, much nicer than typically found. 11'' x 8''. Original color pictorial boards. Original price-clipped color pictorial dust jacket, "14 books (up to now)" on rear flap (ref. Younger). Red and black pictorial endpapers of a Who holding a wreath. Illustrated in red, pink, and black. 13 titles listed at end of book (ref. Younger). [30] leaves. Jacket with some edgewear, soil, and rubbing, overall unusually intact. Binding with only light shelfwear, a couple small bumps to rear board. Interior with faint marginal toning, else bright.
