Seventh printing of the true first edition, published by Victor Gollancz in October, 1936. This was Dorothy L. Sayers' tenth novel featuring Lord Peter Wimsey and the third in which Harriet Vane appears. As stated on the printer's page, the book was originally published by Victor Gollancz on November 4th, 1935, and reprinted five times in 1935 and 1936, before this printing. ***With the following quote by the publisher on the dustwrapper: 'First Cheap Edition - Sayers' most famous detective story - Gaudy Night - 37,000 sold at 8/6 484 pp. 3/6 net'. ***Very good in red cloth-covered boards with black titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked, just slightly faded at the edges. Spine still clean and bright, but slightly flattened. The top edge is slightly dusty and darkened. No creases or bumps to the boards, and no tears to the cloth, even on the spine. There is a slight reading lean to the book, but the spine is tight. None of the usual foxing to the edges of the page block. Internally the book is also very good, with no inscriptions or annotations. Pages generally clean, just slightly tanned, and with some very light foxing mainly to the endpapers and first and last few pages. No serious creases or tears, however there is slight splitting of the paper at the gutter of the title page. No cracking to the fragile binding though. ***In a very good thin paper printed dustwrapper, priced on the front cover at 3/6 net. The dustwrapper is largely complete, with just some slight loss at the head and tail of the spine and corner tips. No loss to the lettering, but please note that a small section of the spine lettering is present but detached (the 'DOR' of 'DOROTHY') There is a split to the spine of the dustwrapper and some loss at the bottom edge between the spine and back panel. There is also a long vertical cut to the back panel. The dustwrapper is nicked and creased at the extremities, and is somewhat marked and discoloured, as is common with Gollancz dustwrappers of this period. The spine of the dustwrapper is remarkably clean and unfaded though. The front and back panels are also very clean. Flaps very clean and bright, retaining the original yellow colour (please see scans). ***204mm x 134mm. 484 pages. ***'"Gaudy Night" (1935) is a mystery novel by Dorothy L. Sayers. The dons of Harriet Vane's alma mater, the all-female Shrewsbury College, Oxford (based on Sayers' own Somerville College), have invited her back to attend the annual "Gaudy" celebrations. However, the mood turns sour when someone begins a series of malicious acts including poison-pen messages, obscene graffiti, and wanton vandalism. Despite the dons' reluctance to share the secret with an outsider, Harriet convinces them to let her bring in Lord Peter Wimsey to assist the investigation -- but his involvement is not without complications, both personal and professional. Although no murder occurs in "Gaudy Night", it includes a great deal of suspense and psychological thrills. The narrative is interwoven with a love story and an examination of women's struggles to enlarge their roles and achieve some independence within the social climate of 1930s England, and the novel has been described as "the first feminist mystery novel"' (Wiki) ***A seventh printing of the first edition, published by Gollancz in 1936. Of interest to collectors of the work of Dorothy L. Sayers. An uncommon book to find in the original dustwrapper. Gollancz produced the books very cheaply, with thin boards and paper, and very thin dustwrappers. In consequence, pre-war and wartime copies of Sayer's detective novels are particularly elusive, and very scarce indeed in the original dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. N° de ref. del artículo 8525
