1st Printing. 174 pages. Published in 2001. Retrospective collection of interviews. Now considered a late-modern classic. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are several, and the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents "Gadamer In Conversation: Reflections And Commentary" in a felicitous English translation. Six lively conversations with one of the 20th-century's Master Thinkers. "Looking back over his life and thought, Gadamer takes up key issues in his philosophy, addresses points of controversy, and replies to his critics, including those who accuse him of having been in complicity with the Nazis. A genial and direct conversationalist, Gadamer is here captured at his best and most accessible. The interviews took place between 1989 and 1996, and all but one appear in English for the first time in this volume. These conversations are a lucid introduction for readers new to the philosopher's thought and for experts, they present an invaluable commentary on Gadamer's most important themes" (Publisher's blurb). If more people read Gadamer (rather than say, Derrida or Chomsky), what Gadamer calls the "speculative mind" would be accorded more value than it has received. "We learn from the work of art how to tarry. I think people will not be able to endure for long doing exactly what everyone else is doing in their so-called free time" (Hans-Georg Gadamer). An absolute "must-have" title for Hans-Georg Gadamer collectors. This title is a late-modern classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Precedes and should NOT be confused with subsequent printings, of which there are several. Copies available online have very serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. One of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER HANS-GEORG GADAMER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0300084889.…
