Frontispiece diagram, and last page advert for the author's, "Treatise On The Gulf Stream," etc. Finlayson outlines the importance of maintaining a safe and healthy ship environment, discussing, cleaning, bilge water, wet hempen cables, drunkenness, humidity, sick-lists. The dry rot section details methods of preserving ship-timbers, moisture, seeds and distribution of fungi, dry and wet-rot, ship ventilation, topical applications for preserving timber, including the use of moss and smoking. Book owned by George R. Brush, M.D., US Navy who served as a surgeon and medical inspector from 1861-1894, with his small margin pencil "x" noting commentary he deemed relevant. Slight text toning, raised bands, spine panels lettered in gilt. Dr. Brush's stamp half title and title page. Tight and firm binding, half centimeter loss at lower spine.
