Descripción del artículo del vendedor

First UK edition, first impression. London: Thames and Hudson, 1972. Octavo. Original brown cloth. Spine lettered in gilt. A hint of spotting to the edges, chiefly to the top, with faint offsetting to the front endpaper, else near fine, in a near fine, unpriced dust jacket, likely intended for export, with mild traces of wear to the spine tips and a little spotting to the underside. A pioneering work of socially and ecologically responsible design, with an introduction by R. Buckminster Fuller. Papanek opens with a deliberately provocative assessment of his profession: “There are professions more harmful than industrial design, but only a very few of them.” He challenges designers’ involvement in waste, pollution and planned obsolescence, arguing that their responsibilities extend to the social and environmental consequences of the objects they create. His alternative places human needs at the centre of design practice, directing attention towards people poorly served by commercial production, including disabled people, older people and communities with limited resources. Proposals and projects developed with students and collaborators accompany the argument, among them the tin-can radio designed with George Seeger. First published in Swedish, and subsequently in English by Pantheon in New York as Design for the Real World: Human Ecology and Social Change, the book appeared in this first UK edition under the subtitle Making to Measure, and was printed in the United States. Translated into more than twenty languages and widely used in design education, the book helped shape subsequent debates about sustainable and inclusive design. Its influence lay in making social need, resource use and environmental harm central considerations in deciding what designers should create and whom their work should serve.…
