The characters are sketched so thoroughly that Willum Marigold becomes as well known to us as if we had met him yesterday: the story of his relationship with his adopted daughter is movingly, enchantingly told---In his biographical notes to the present tale Mr Percy H. Muir explains how the present story, now entitled Doctor Marigold, was first published as a single part or "prescription" in Doctor Marigold's prescriptions, the Christmas number of ALL THE YEAR ROUND for 1865. Its original title was "To be taken immediately", and it formed the first "prescription" in the collection of stories.---A curious convention had grown up around these Christmas numbers during the nine years of the life of HOUSEHOLD WORDS, and it continued with ALL THE YEAR ROUND. Not one of these annual stories was entirely the work of Dickens. Each of them had some chapters or stories by Dickens, but other writers also contributed. Thus, in the case of Doctor Marigold's Prescriptions, Dickens wrote only the first (this present story), sixth and eighth "prescriptions".' (Quote from inside front of jacket blurb)***Hard to find wartime first edition in its original dustwrapper in nicely preserved condition for such a fragile thin publication with a dustwrapper prone to damage.***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. N° de ref. del artículo 1751
