A good ex-library book, bound in red cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. Faint stamp on inside front end paper. Dust jacket is good with some wear, marks and a little grubby, but is intact. Some wear to the spine at crown and slivers at foot of dust jacket and to top edge. All pages are free from notations with occasional marks. All edges are finished in gilt though soiled. A nice copy overall, and a good reference work for those with an interest in G&S. A heavy book which will need extra postage.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s operas are some of the world’s best-loved musical works, delighting audiences with their joyous wit, topsy-turvy logic and extravagant wordplay. This glorious treasury is the definitive annotated edition of all fourteen of their operas.
From the partially lost work Thespis, the first collaboration between W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, through the triumphant comic romps The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado, to lesser-performed gems such as the fanciful The Sorcerer and the acerbic lampoon Patience, Gilbert’s libretti are collected here in their most accurate and faithful form. There is a fascinating commentary on each work, telling the extraordinary stories behind the inspiration for the opera and its performance history, and giving plot summaries and original cast lists.
Also containing original illustrations from Gilbert’s ‘Bab Ballads’, as well as extensive notes for every work, this ultimate Gilbert and Sullivan collection will delight all devotees of the incomparable duo.

Acerca del autor
Playwright/lyricist William S. Gilbert (1836-1911) and composer Arthur S. Sullivan (1842-1900) defined operetta or comic operas in Victorian England with a series of their internationally successful and timeless works known as the Savoy Operas.
Ed Glinert was born in Dalston, London, and read Classical Hebrew at Manchester University. In 1983 he set up City Life, Manchester's listings magazine, and he has since worked for Radio Times, Private Eye and Mojo. He is the co-author of Fodor's Rock & Roll Traveler USA and Fodor's Rock & Roll Traveler Great Britain and Ireland, and recently edited The Diary of a Nobody by George and Weedon Grossmith, and annotated two volumes of Sherlock Holmes stories, all for Penguin Classics.
Mike Leigh is a film-maker and dramatist. His 1999 film Topsy-Turvy examined Gilbert and Sullivan’s world at the time of the original productions of Princess Ida and The Mikado. It won two Oscars. His other films include Nuts in May, Life is Sweet, Naked, Secrets and Lies and Vera Drake. Among his many plays are Babies Grow Old, Abigail’s Party, Ecstasy, Goose-Pimples and Two Thousand Years. He is a Vice President of the Sir Arthur Sullivan Society.

Descripción de la tienda
jdp books is a small, family owned bookseller, selling pre-owned books and a small selection of fine art, to the UK and worldwide. Our aim is to unite mainly academic readers and researchers with the knowledge they seek, and we would love our books to go to those who have a real interest in the subjects we hold. We value the ethos of sustainability and encourage the re-use of pre-owned books. We specialize primarily in History, the Classics and Archaeology, but we also hold a wide range of titles across many subjects, including some rare and out of print and first editions. We hold titles in Travel and exploration, Poetry, Literature, Politics, Art, Economics and more, and we hope to send our customers very good quality books with as little signs of wear as possible (depending, of course, on the age of the book). We also hold a small but growing number of art works, which we feel might be of interest to art lovers. Our dedicated team are happy to help with all enquiries and will try to ensure you find the book or artwork you are looking for.…
