Printed wrappers, small 4to, 25 cm, 23 pp, 8 plates. 130 lots. From Herrmann: 'Sotheby's Portrait of an Auction House': " A .sale. on 16 July. 1920.included the statuary forming part of the Lord Taunton's heirlooms from Quantock Lodge, Bridgwater in Somerset. There were various busts by Canova, Nollekens, Thorwaldecn, Houdon and Rysbrack. The outstanding item was a late fifteenth-century Florentine bust of Lorenzo di Medici, il Magnifico, 26 inches high. Again this type of bust had been identified by Bode; other copies of it existed in Berlin and in the collection of Lord Methuen at Corsham Court, This example had been bought in the 1840s by Lord Taunton from Professor Santarelli, a well-known Florentine sculptor, through whose hands a good many important pieces of Renaissance sculpture passed into foreign collections. It now fetched £2,050. The Taunton heirlooms were followed by a single anonymous property of a Royal Stuart sword of about 1616 by Clemens Home of Solingen, elaborately decorated with gilt ornament, and thought to be the only one of its kind outside the Royal Collection at Windsor. It had been used by Charles I as Prince of Wales and was sold for £200. Then followed many lots of fine English furniture of the Queen Anne and Chippendale periods, And, surprisingly, six drawings by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, a grand piano designed by William Morris, a large Morris carpet which had been specially designed and made for the room in which the last lot in the sale was kept. This was a set of twelve tapestries designed by Burne-Jones and woven at the Merton Abbey Works by William Morris. The tapestries depicted scenes from the legend of the Quest for the Holy Grail, and the catalogue stated, in capital letters, that this series of tapestries is the finest set of examples of the work of these two great artists which have ever been offered for sale; both gave much time, thought and care to their design and execution and they form a unique record of their work and ideals'. After a long description of all the panels - which varied greatly in size - the catalogue entry concluded, again in capital letters, The life-long cooperation and mutual assistance rendered to each other by these two great craftsmen seems to have reached its culminating point in the production of these beautiful tapestries.". .They were sold by the order of the Trustees of W. K. D'Arcy of Stanmore Hall, Middlesex, and fetched £4,600. " Neatly priced in ink. Wrappers partly browned and slightly edgeworn, foxing spots throughout. N° de ref. del artículo ABE-51860
