Blind-decorated cloth, gilt cover- and spine-titles, 8vo, iv, 200 pp, tinted lithograph frontispiece. 1894 + 619 lots. Catalogue of the famous 22-day sale which neatly links two of Britain's greatest collectors, Lord Northwick (1770-1859) and Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872). Northwick, a great art connoisseur, succeeded to his title in 1800 and devoted the rest of his life to collecting in various fields but particularly pictures: "He acquired pictures of all schools, especially Italian pictures from all periods, Flemish pictures, and contemporary British paintings. His pioneering interest was in Italian pictures of the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries." (ODNB). Having outgrown the special picture gallery he had built at Northwick Park, he acquired the grand Thirlestane House in Cheltenham to house his collections. His death in 1859, with no issue or will, resulted in this auction of some 1894 artworks and a further 619 lots of "furniture, plate, wines, and effects". Among those bidding was the bibliomaniac Sir Thomas Phillipps, who famously wrote to his wife lamenting (but not really) his nearly 100 picture purchases: " My dear Wyfy, Poor Tippy ruined at the Northwick sale!!! What a pity his careful prudent Wyfy was not with him. Could not help it! Such beautiful Pictys! But, where to put them? " The answer was, of course, to buy Thirlestane House too, which Sir Thomas duly did, moving his enormous collection of manuscripts there from Middle Hill. The catalogue has a fine picture of the house as its frontispiece. Covers partly faded and rubbed with loss of glaze to cloth, spine-ends slightly worn and corners bumped, small shadow of removed label around spine, slight agetoning and occasional minor foxing and minor marks to contents, pencil annotations to two lots which had appeared earlier in the Solly collection sale (Christie's, * may 1847), otherwise Good.
