First impression of the first trade edition, preceded only by the limited edition of 250 numbered copies signed by the author. With 16 full-page coloured plates by H. M. Brock, including frontispiece showing 'Hynd Horn', and pictorial endpapers. ***Very good in brown cloth-covered boards, with a velvet-like feel, with gilt titles and publisher's decorative device to the spine and front board. The gilt is somewhat faded to the spine, but bright to the front board. The boards are clean - just slightly marked. Edges of boards very slightly rubbed. Corners and head and tail of spine also slightly rubbed. Top edge of page block stained brown to match the cloth by the publisher. Fore-edge of page block rough-cut (untrimmed). No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good with no inscriptions. Pages clean - just some sporadic foxing to a few pages, otherwise contents clean. ***290mm x 220mm. 280 pages plus a two page index, detailing the varied sources of the ballads. ***Nichols selected ballads from a wide range of sources and this collection includes The Gaberlunzie Man, Sir Lancelot du Lake, Thomas the Rhymer, and The Earl of Mar's Daughter. The illustrations are superb. Colour Plates: Hynd Horn, King Estmere, Barbara Allen's Cruelty, Fair Rosamond, The Boy and the Mantle, King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid, May Collin, Thomas the Rhymer, Young Beichan, Clerk Colvill, Gil Morrice, Child Waters, The Earl of Mar's Daughter, The Bailiff's Daughter of Islington, The Three Ravens and The Wife of Usher's Well. ***A very copy of the first trade edition of "A Book of Old Ballads", with quality illustrations and printed on quality thick paper. Large format quarto size. Of interest to collectors of the work of Beverley Nichols and the illustrator H. M. Brock, as well as those interested in traditional ballads. ***First impression of the first trade edition - would make an attractive gift book. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. - this is a heavy book - please contact us for postal rates if you live outside the UK. …
