Descripción:

THE MOST IMPORTANT ARCHIVE OF PABLO CASALS MATERIAL EVER OFFERED FOR SALE. Includes: (**1**) 94 signed letters (82 autograph, 12 typed) from Casals to his brother Enric (sometimes to Enric and his wife, sometimes to "Everyone", which would include Enric's children), dated from 1921 to 1965. Many of the letters are on hotel stationery, and many are several pages long. The letters were sent from Europe, the Americas, and Morocco. Casals was a reserved man, and he opened himself up more to Enric, his best friend throughout his life, than to anyone else. In the letters he discusses music (Enric was a fellow musician and composer), the Bach Suites(!), concerts, the cities he is visiting, family matters, finances, his health, the honors he receives, etc. Many of the later letters concern the composition and reception of "El pessebre", his most important work as a composer. There are numerous letters written during the Spanish Civil War, and these are particularly emotional, as he is clearly worried about the fate of his family. Almost all of the letters are in Catalan, although Casals wrote one or two in Spanish just after the end of the Civil War, doubtless wanting to avoid having his letters delayed by the censors. The typed letters are all from the 1960s. Some of those are in Spanish, obviously because Casals dictated them to Marta, his second wife and later his widow, who would not have been able to type in Catalan. The letters are all unpublished. (**2**) 10 autograph signed postcards from Pablo to Enric, with small writing and ample text. (**3**) 4 Christmas cards from Pablo to Enric, inscribed and signed by Casals. (**4**) 9 signed autograph letters and 13 signed autograph postcards from Pablo to Carles (Enric's son and Pablo's nephew and godson). (**5**) 8 original photographs reproduced in Enric's book (Pau Casals. Barcelona: Pòrtic, 1979), including the masterful and justly famous portrait reproduced on p. 54. (**6**) 11 other assorted photographs. (**7**) 10 telegrams to and from Casals. (**8**) Correspondence received BY Casals: A. Five long letters from his mother. four from 1898-99, one from 1923. B. Four letters from his father, 1898-99. Casals' father died in 1908, letters from him to his son are of the greatest rarity. C. 19 letters and notes from the Conde de Morphy (extremely important: his first patron) and his wife, 1898-99. These letters are cited in Beatriz García Alvarez de la Villa, "Guillermo Morphy, el conde de Morphy (1836-1899): música y mecenazgo en la Restauración Borbónica" (Oviedo: Universidad de Oviedo, 2022, pp. 258-59.) D. Three signed and annotated visiting cards from the Conde de Morphy. Undated. E. 19 other letters from various people, 1890s-1950s, in Spanish, Catalan, and French. One of the early letters sings the praises of Rosina, Casals' first love, whose parents objected to her being courted by a musician. She died young, and some authorities attest that he never got over her. THE MOST IMPORTANT ARCHIVE OF CASALS MATERIAL IN PRIVATE HANDS. N° de ref. del artículo 38750
