INSCRIBED. Near fine. Brownish paper boards quarter-bound in brown leather. Black titles with gilt-stamped seal of The American Institute of Architects on upper cover. 4to. Los Angeles: Young and McCallister Printers, 1923. 64 pp. Photos, sketches, architectural drawings. Inscribed on title-page by west coast architect [George] Edwin Bergstrom to California Southland (a bi-monthly magazine founded by Mabel Urmy Seares that focused on architecture, literature, and society in greater Los Angeles). Book includes photos and drawings of some of southern California s most iconic and monumental structures attesting to the region s unique architectural boom of the 1920s: The Los Angeles Coliseum, The California Yacht Club at Wilmington, Union High School, Whittier College buildings, The University Club of Los Angeles, The Huntington Library, The Pacific Finance Building, the Al Mailakah Temple, The Wilshire Country Club, and The Ambassador Hotel. There are also photos and drawings of restoration projects at several colonial Spanish missions. The photos and architectural drawings provide many examples of the mission-deco vogue for private residences in 1920s L.A. Additionally, there are visuals of commercial real estate, gardens, landscaping projects, public and cultural buildings (hospitals, schools, libraries, and theaters). On page 7, there is a charter list of Institute members of the Southern California Chapter of Architects with penciled notations indicating the addresses of many of the architects homes and/or building projects. Pages 8-9 provide a list of members of the Los Angeles Architectural Club. Pages 10-11 reproduce a Program for Awards with guidelines for a juried architectural competition; page 12 lists awardees granted for 1922. The format suggests an ambitious plan for yearly competitions held by the Southern California chapter of the AIA and the LA Architectural Club. However, no yearbooks for previous or subsequent years exist and so this book appears to be a rare one off. Some OCLC entries list the book as unpaginated, but this is incorrect. The copy we have, as well as the copy at the University of Virginia that we have inspected, both have page numbers in brackets centered at the foot of each page. N° de ref. del artículo F060DGN5-065
