Offered together here are Brown's Preliminary Tectonic Map 1:10,000,000 as it was originally issued in his USGS report prepared for the Saudi Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (1971), and his resulting Tectonic Map 1:4,000,000 (1972). Brown justifies both as "Currently, ideas about tectonics are being radically revised. These revisions will have economic as well as scientific importance. This is a first attempt to introduce these ideas into the structural picture of the Peninsula" (Report p1). (1) PRELIMINARY MAP: original green printed wraps 22x28cm, (8)pp printed to rectos only, with colour folding map bound in. Very good with some wear. A covering note laid in at the front and dated 15 Jan 1971, is addressed to the Deputy Minister for Mineral Resources, Dr Fadil Kabbani, from James Norton, USGS' Geologist-in-Charge of the Saudi Arabian Mineral Exploration Project, stating that he is sending him 20 copies (manually corrected from 50) on Brown's behalf. Building on his Geological Map of the Arabian Peninsula (1963), Brown explains that he prepared the preliminary version from all available geological, geophysical, and structural information, including from USGS staff and the Continental Oil Company. He also describes the methods, and his main observations. The map, @30x28cm, 1:10,000,000, is colour coded for tectonic epochs and their closing foldings, tectonic structures, volcanic rocks, and sea bottom relief. (2) TECTONIC MAP (Arabian Peninsula Series Map AP-2): colour folding 63x100cm, 1:4,000,000, in the original buff envelope titled in English and Arabic 24x30cm. Map fine, envelope very good with short closed tears. With a greater level of detail than the preliminary version, colouring denotes the various epochs and types of rock, structural contours, faults, and other features. Settlements are also labelled. There is an index map to the right-hand edge, with extensive explanatory text (on the crystalline shield, structural contours, salt tectonics, Oman Mountains, Tertiary volcanism, Red Sea - Gulf of Aden), and information sources. A note states "Indicated position of boundary lines not demarcated on the ground are not necessarily definitive and not binding on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Boundaries in South and East are undefined and are not shown". N° de ref. del artículo 4816
