This map is from an official U.S. Government report by Lt. Herndon titled Exploration of the Valley of the Amazon, published in 1854. The mission was to explore the entire Amazon Basin, which turned out not to be possible in the time allotted. This map of the area not explored was considered the best available at that time. *** Originally published in 1790 by Manuel Sobreviela, this copy is a version updated to 1830. Note the red boundary marking the limits of civilization just east of the Andes. Towns and cities are few, but there are missions and churches scattered all over the place. Many of the indigenous tribes are either located or listed. Look for how many roads actually cross the Andes. A nice historical map which would certainly be interesting to contrast with a modern map of the same region. *** Clear, clean image with good colors. Center horizontal and vertical fold, as issued, plus a long diagonal mis-fold on right side. Right margin chipped in a few places close to neat line and has been widened with like paper for matting purposes. Partial separation at folds repaired on blank verso with archival tape. Small hole at folds intersection with partial loss of one letter. Printed on thin government paper of that era and thus must be handles with care, *** Image size is 15.5 inches high by 10.75 inches .…
