A rare seriocomic pictorial map of Europe at the outbreak of World War I. Likely designed in September 1914, after the German advance on Paris had been halted with the aid of the British at the battles of Mons and the Marne. The comedic depiction of the protagonist nations as dogs reflects the optimism of the British at this early stage of the conflict. The English bulldog, flanked by the French poodle, delivers a nasty bite to the nose of the pickelhaube-wearing German dachshund. This almost whimsical view of the war was of course short-lived. Soon Johnson, Riddle & Co. would be designing recruitment posters to attract volunteers into a war effort that had utterly lost the sense of playful optimism depicted here. A section of text at the bottom margin by William Emanuel gives a dog's-eye description of the scenes portrayed on the map. Ref. Bryars and Harper pp 46-47. Near fine. Map has creases from being folded into 16ths. There are a few tiny separations at fold intersections but no loss. Single sheet. 22" x 30". Folds into paper covers. N° de ref. del artículo 955

Chromolithograph, 19.3" x 28" plus margins, with four columns of text printed below the map. CONDITION: Very good, light wear to margins. A rare "serio-comic" map of Europe in 1914 with warring nations represented as dogs and other countries represented as caricatured soldiers displaying their attitudes toward the war. Issued shortly after the French and British forces stopped Germany's advance at the Battle of Mons on 23 August 1914, this map represents the war's principal protagonists as the "Dogs of War": the British bulldog, the French poodle wearing a Phrygian Cap, and the German dachshund wearing a pickelhaube and chained to its ally Austria-Hungary, a yapping mongrel. The British bulldog bites the German dachshund on the nose, drawing blood. Russia is represented by a bear, and presiding over Eastern Europe is a large steamroller driven by Russia's Tsar Nicholas, who heads towards Europe's centerthreatening to flatten everything in its path. Hovering above Britain at upper-left is a giant sailor holding dog leashes attached to British battleships that steam toward the continent. Other figures include a Spanish bullfighter, a smiling Dutchman smoking a cigar, a knife-wielding Greek, an Italian carabiniere holding a pistol, Balkan wasps, and a Turkish soldier with his pet Dachshund controlling a fleet of battleships in the Black Sea. The map captures English optimism early in the war; it was believed that British naval superiority would end the war quickly. The map extends from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Black Sea in the east, and from Scandinavia in the north to Italy in the south. The text at the bottom by the Jewish satirist Walter Emanuel (18691915) provides commentary on the political situation in Europe during the early stages of the war, and describes the combatant nations as types of dogelucidating the map's message. Emanuel's text begins: "The Dogs of War are loose in Europe, and a nice noise they are making!" Some have speculated that the map was made for children and distributed in schools, a notion that seems to be supported by a sentence near the end of the text, reading "Search well and you may find many things." Born in New York, George Washington Bacon (18301922) was a mapmaker and publisher. In 1861, Bacon moved to London and established a series of businesses, but in 1867 went bankrupt. In 1870, he founded the publishing firm G. W. Bacon & Co. In 1893, Bacon purchased the map business of James Wyld. Around 1900, G. W. Bacon & Co. was purchased by and incorporated into the Scottish publishing house of W. & A. K. Johnston. Maps using the Bacon imprint were produced as late as 1956. Around 1967 W. & A. K. Johnston's name was changed to Johnston & Bacon. Based in London, Johnson, Riddle & Company Ltd. was a printing company founded in 1910. During World War I, the Parliamentary Recruitment Committee contracted with the firm to print recruitment posters. The company operated until 1974. This map was also issued in pocket map form, dissected and mounted on linen, with covers featuring the title, "Serio-comique map of Europe at war." A German version of the map was published in 1914 under the title, Horch! Horch! Die Hunde Bellen!: Mit Einer Begleitschrift Von Walter Emanuel (Hamburg, Germany: G. Nölting; E. Zimmermann, 1914). A vivid and many-layered satirical map of Europe during World War I. REFERENCES: "Hark! Hark! The dogs do bark!" at British Library online; Bryers, Tim, and Tom Harper. Map dimensions 48.5 x 69.5 cm, overall 55.5 x 74.5 cm. Folding colour printed comic map of Europe, mounted on linen, folds between publisher's brown cloth boards with a printed title label to the upper cover. The cover label a little soiled, a little creasing at the folds, a single very short tear with no loss to the lower edge, a very good example overall. A richly coloured "Serio-Comique" or allegorical map of Europe in the early stages of the First World War. The belligerent nations are represented by stereotypical breeds of dog: the British bulldog, the French poodle and the German dachshund with a great bear representing Russia. The map is further embellished with the striding figure of Winston Churchill, dressed as a sailor to signify his role as First Lord of the Admiralty, holding numerous dog leads with battleships stretching out towards the continent. Similarly, the tsar of Russia is shown riding a large steamroller towards central and eastern Europe. The four columns of Emanuel's note to the lower margin of the map is typically jingoistic and closes with the refrain "All this, and more, may be seen depicted above. Search well and you may find many things. But not Peace. Peace has gone to the Dogs for the present.". Nº de ref. del artículo: 26000

Original coloured lithograph; minor repairs to splits along old folds, laid on archivist tissue to strengthen, overall a fine example. A propaganda poster map with a note by Walter Emanuel (1869-1915), beginning with: "The Dogs of War are loose in Europe, and a nice noise they are making!" Emanuel, a popular Punch columnist and dog loving author, wrote the text for this cartoon map of the European War of late 1914. Designed and printed by Johnson Riddle & Co. in London. This original version was probably published in November 1914. The military situation in Europe at the time is satirised by Emanuel using stereotypical canine guise, for example; a sturdy British Bulldog, a dandified French poodle and a German dachshund complete with pickelhelm, its nose caught in the vice like jaws of the advancing British bulldog. Over in the east the Russian Czar drives a massive steamroller towards central Europe with a mounted cossack and a Russian bear in attendance. The last paragraph of the descriptive text reads: "All this, and more may be seen depicted above. Search well and you may well find many things. But not peace. Peace has gone to the Dogs for the present - until a satisfactory muzzle has been found for the Dachshund." Offered for 1 shilling 100 years ago and sold through the London booksellers, G W Bacon & Co. 127 The Strand. Complete with original paper wrapper. Nº de ref. del artículo: 13040
