Original grey printed card slipcase 16x23cm, containing the colour Geological Map on 2 adjacent sheets each @86x56cm, plus the accompanying Explanatory Notes in green printed yapp wraps, 15x22cm, 86pp with 4 figures (2 of which folding) + 2 tables bound in on 3 folding sheets. Map and Explanatory Notes near fine, slipcase good with some wear. The surveyed region lies north of Tehran on the south side of the Elburz Range, a long, wholly mountainous band extending for about 1,600km from the Karadj Valley to the Demavend Massif. Until this time, geological knowledge was scant. Riccardo Assereto of the Geological Mission to the Central Elburz Range (Iran) conducted the survey during 3 consecutive seasons in 1961-3 under the direction of Prof. A Desio, and under the auspices of the Italian National Council of Research, and the Geological Survey of Iran. It was mostly on a 1:25,000 scale, with 1:10,000 for "particularly complicated zones". This map, drawn by F. Giorgi, uses colour to distinguish various types of sedimentary and volcanic, and intrusive igneous rock. It includes a detailed Legend, Index Map, and Tectonical Sketch Map. The Explanatory Notes include sections on historical geological accounts, a general geological outline, detailed stratigraphy, intrusive igneous rocks, structure, and physiography, with bibliography. Riccardo Assereto (1937-76) was an Italian palaeontologist and geologist, and Professor at the University of Milan. He died tragically in a landslide on Mount Bivera in Friuli, along with his 11-year-old son Andrea and the geologist Giulio Pisa. Ardito Desio (1897-2001) was regarded as "one of the last great heroes of the epic epoch of geological field exploration", known especially for his work in the central Sahara: "Just as Doughty's work in Arabia in the 1870s was the basis on which Aramco searched for oil there in the 1930s, Desio's geological maps and reports of the 1920-30s formed the basis for oil exploration in Libya in the 1960s". Among his many missions, he led the first ascent of K2 (Geological Society obituary). N° de ref. del artículo 4795
