One of 200 (226) numbered copies printed by the artist at Midnight Paper Sales in Garamond on Zerkall paper and signed by the author and artist. 8 double- or full-page colour wood engravings by Gaylord Schanilec, plus a wood-engraved device in colours on the title-page and a folding map at the rear, the latter with an ornament hand-coloured by the author. Bound at the Campbell-Logan bindery in full chocolate cloth blocked in gilt on the upper board, leather label lettered in gilt on the spine. Handmade Belgian flax paper slipcase with a repeat of the engraving of Minnehaha Falls. A fine copy. The text not only chronicles the early explorations of the Upper Mississippi, but leads you to tropical marine corals captured in stone, and reminisces on the visits of Longfellow, Thoreau and Mark Twain.
