Translated by Katherine Wormeley. Bookplate of Edmund C. Stedman (poet, journalistm scientist), with a letter to him by the translator pasted on to endpaper. The letter is dated 1892, even though the book was published in 1904. A contemporary review of the book and an article about Sainte-Beuve are attached to endpapers. Stedman was a colleague at the NY Stock Exchange with the current owner's great-grandfather, who may thus have received it from Stedman. LIght blue cloth boards with pasted portrait of Anne de Gonzagh. Gold design on spine, with title rubbed off. Hinges are broken off of spine, but cover is intact and inner pages are good. A fascinating account of famous French men and women of the 17 c, including Cardinal Richelieu, Cardinal Mazarin, Francois Duc de la Rochefoucauld, two Anne-Genevieves de Bourbon, Louis XIV and others. With 18 illustrations, mostly from steel engravings. This single volume is a selection of the entries of the 2 volume set, also published in 1904. 2 lb. N° de ref. del artículo 12PorWo
