The preface by Zapf and afterword by Paul Standard are in English. The main body of text consists of 100 quotations (printed on rectos only) relating to the printing arts ("exercises in typographic design"), set in sixteen languages using various types from the D. Stempel foundry, printed in black and red, with each leaf numbered in blind. With an index of types used for alphabets and texts. One of only a few copies specially bound thus for presentation to VIPs, and quite uncommon. Without the rear pocket and booklet. Laid in is a black-and-white photograph of Zapf by the noted New York artist and photographer A. Burton Carnes. A cheerful Zapf is holding the lever of a handpress, drink glass in hand. One of 1000 copies of this title printed by Heinrich Egenolf; signed by Zapf on the colophon page. With the small and elegant calligraphic book label of John and Jean Michael.
