JAMES WILSON (1742-1798). James Wilson was a Scottish American Founding Father and signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was a legal scholar, jurist, and statesman who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court from 1789 to 1798. In 1787 he was a major participant in drafting the U.S. Constitution and became one of only six people to sign both documents. Wilson was one of the first four Associate Justices appointed to the Supreme Court by George Washington.DS. 1 pg. September 13, 1797. Pennsylvania. A document signed James Wilson, a legal agreement and financial receipt related to Pennsylvania land speculation: by Alexander Scott in presence of Wm Langdon It is hereby agreed by the parties above mentioned at the time of executing these articles that if the said James Wilson should not take the Warrants out of the Land Office in due time, and thereby should not obtain the Lands in the said articles mentioned, the said James Wilson shall nevertheless pay to the said Alexander Scott and Ebenezer Bowman the consideration money therein mentioned. James Wilson September 13th 1797 recd of James Wilson Esqr thirty-two pounds part of the expences of surveying thirty two tracts of land mentioned in the above articles Ebenezer Bowman Articles between James Wilson Esqr & Scott & Bowman. This document acts as an addendum to an agreement regarding land warrants. It states that even if James Wilson fails to retrieve the land warrants from the Land Office in time to secure the property, he is still obligated to pay Alexander Scott and Ebenezer Bowman the agreed money. A signed acknowledgment by Ebenezer Bowman confirming that he received 32 pounds from James Wilson, Esq., toward the cost of surveying 32 tracts of land is mentioned in their agreement. During the late 1790s, James Wilson engaged in massive, high-risk land speculation across Pennsylvania, New York, and the South. By 1797, his debts caught up with him, leading to severe financial ruin and a brief time in debtors prison shortly before his death in 1798. This document is in fine condition with dark writing.…
