With reproductions of a few letters in English. 13 illustrations; some are color reproductions of Japanese paintings, others are reproductions of photos or prints of various figures in American history, such as Washington, Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, etc. Color-printed floral design, cloth over boards. All edges gilt. The back strip is lacking in this copy. Splitting to the inner hinges. A few upper page corners show creasing. A presentation copy signed on the back end paper: "To Mr. William G. Mather with the compliments of Yonezo Okamoto." This copy was sent to Cleveland, Ohio-based book collector William G. Mather (1857 1951) with a signed letter from Okamoto (1881-1967) on a sheet of printed stationery and includes a two-page typed synopsis of this book. This letter reads: Okamoto & Co., Inc. Woolworth Building New York March 14, 1923. Mr. William G. Mather In care of Cleveland Cliffs Mining Co. Cleveland, Ohio. Dear Mr. Mather: At the suggestion of Judge Joseph Buffington, of Pittsburgh, Pa., I take great pleasure in forwarding you, under separate cover, with my compliments, a copy of "The Fragrance of Roses;" and I enclose herewith a synopsis of the contents of this book. "The Fragrance of Roses" has been translated into Chinese, as I want China, as well as Japan, to understand the true American spirit, as exemplified in the lives of those of whom I have written in my book. At the suggestion of Judge Buffington, I am having this book translated into English which work is now well under way. I am also sending you under separate cover a catalog of Seiho s paintings which are now being exhibited at the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, Pa.
