Cloth. Condición: Good. John Leech and 'Phiz' Ilustrador. Two volumes of the sporting novels of Robert Smith Surtees. Containing: Mr Romford's Hounds Hawbuck Grange; or, the Sporting Adventures of Thomas Scott, Esq. Illustrated with thirty-one coloured plates and many more illustrations in the text by John Leech and 'Phiz'. Surtees launched out on his own with the New Sporting Magazine in 1831, contributing the comic papers which appeared as Jorrocks' Jaunts and Jollities in 1838. Jorrocks, the sporting cockney grocer, with his vulgarity and good-natured artfulness, was a great success with the public, and Surtees produced more Jorrocks novels in the same vein, notably Handley Cross and Hillingdon Hall, where the description of the house is very reminiscent of Hamsterley. Another hero, Soapey Sponge, appears in Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour, possibly Surtees best work. All Surtees' novels were composed at Hamsterley Hall, where he wrote standing up at a desk, like Victor Hugo. In decorative red and gilt cloth bindings. Externally, sound, though with some fading, marks and bumping. Internally, firmly bound. Two hinges are strained. Ink signatures to the front free-endpaper of Mr Romford's Hounds. Pages are bright, though with some foxing. Good. book.

Six works in six volumes, 8vo. (8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches). Numerous hand-coloured plates after John Leech, H. K. Browne, and others. Red half morocco, spines with raised bands gilt in compartments. A finely bound set from the pen of the 19th-century's best known sporting author: Thackeray envied him, William Morris considered him a master of life. Surtees' best-selling works are humorous and lively. The author was arguably a match for Dickens in the field of social observation, whilst surpassing him as an observer of the natural world: with warmth and humour Surtees captured an era and a way of life that reached its zenith during Queen Victoria's reign. The Sporting Novels were essential reading in the country houses of Victorian England and deserve a place on the shelves of today's private library.

Leather. Condición: Fine. John Leech; H.K. Browne; W.T. Maud Ilustrador. The selected works of noted English author Robert Smith Surtees, sumptuously bound in Bayntun binding. This six volume library set collects the selected works of celebrated novelist Robert Smith Surtees which achieved praise for their vigorous and engaging style. Although these works were not particularly popular when they were originally published, due to the comic, satiric and unsentimental style of Surtees' writing which clashed with the Victorian ideals of moralistic literature, these colloquial and discursive novels have outlasted many other similar works of the time. Incorporating the illustrations of John Leech, the artists' work was often complimented for elevating Surtees' writing, and provided Leech with an opportunity to do some of his best work. The set collects the following works: 'Handley Cross', 'Hawbuck Grange', 'Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour', 'Ask Mamma', 'Plain Or Ringlets?', and 'Mr Romford's Hounds'.With monochrome vignette illustrations and coloured plates in all volumes, collated complete. The volumes in this set are all undated, dated from copac.A master of comic characters and observation, Robert Smith Surtees and his work is fondly remembered, presented here in an attractively bound library set. Rebound in attractive red half morocco with gilt stamped decoration to the spine, with Bayntun binders stamp to the front free end paper. Externally, very smart, with only very minor marks. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally bright and clean, with only some occasional minor handling marks, and some off-setting to the front and rear free end papers as expected. A few of the tissue guards to the coloured plates have minor tears. Fine. book.

Robert Smith Surtees (17 May 1805 16 March 1864) was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer. He was the second son of Anthony Surtees of Hamsterley Hall, a member of an old County Durham family. He left for London in 1825, intending to practise law in the capital, but had difficulty making his way and began contributing to the Sporting Magazine. He launched out on his own with the New Sporting Magazine in 1831, contributing the comic papers which appeared as Jorrocks' Jaunts and Jollities in 1838. Jorrocks, the sporting cockney grocer, with his vulgarity and good-natured artfulness, was a great success with the public, and Surtees produced more Jorrocks novels in the same vein, notably Handley Cross, where the description of the house is very reminiscent of Hamsterley. Another hero, Soapey Sponge, appears in Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour, possibly Surtees best work. All Surtees' novels were composed at Hamsterley Hall, where he wrote standing up at a desk, like Victor Hugo. In 1835, Surtees abandoned his legal practice and after inheriting Hamsterley Hall in 1838, devoted himself to hunting and shooting, meanwhile writing anonymously for his own pleasure. He was a friend and admirer of the great hunting man Ralph Lambton, who had his headquarters at Sedgefield County Durham, the 'Melton of the North'. Surtees became Lord High Sheriff of Durham in 1856. He died in Brighton in 1864 and was buried in Ebchester church. Though Surtees did not set his novels in any readily identifiable locality, he uses North East place-names like Sheepwash, Howell (How) Burn, and Winford Rig. His memorable Geordie, James Pigg in Handley Cross is based on Joe Kirk, a Slaley huntsman. The famous incident, illustrated by Leech, when Pigg jumps into the melon frame was inspired by a similar episode involving Joe Kirk in Corbridge. As a creator of comic personalities, Surtees is still very readable today. Thackeray envied him his powers of observation, while William Morris considered him 'a master of life' and ranked him with Dickens. The novels are engaging and vigorous, and abound with sharp social observation, with a keener eye than Dickens for the natural world. Perhaps Surtees most resembles Dickens of Pickwick Papers, which was originally intended as mere supporting matter for a series of sporting illustrations to rival Jorrocks.
