Plates tanned with some foxing. Pagination: Vol I xxiv, 643, [1]pp; Vol II xvi, 488pp; Vol III xx, 675pp; Vol IV xl, 506pp; Atlas Vol 27, [1], plus 61 plates (plate xxvi and xxvi*). Provenance: inscription to Allan C Sym M.D. from M. L. Phin to the front of Vol I with his ownership stamp. Approximately 8 ¾ inches tall (22.5cm) text volumes; approximately 11 ½ inches tall (29cm) atlas volume. Condition Report Externally Spine fair to good condition structurally sound, worn with loss to the cloth, gilt titles. Joints fair good condition sound, rubbed and worn with some loss. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition worn and marked. Page edges good condition all edges are tanned, darkened to the top. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition sound, repaired to some. Paste downs good condition tanned paper paste downs. End papers good condition tanned paper end papers. Title good condition tanned. Pages good condition tanned, some foxing to the plates. Binding fair to good condition sound, worn set.

First collected edition, 4 volumes in 2, 8vo, plus quarto atlas; frontispiece portrait after Flaxman and folding facsimile in text volumes; atlas with 14 preliminary leaves, frontispiece portrait after Joshua Reynolds, and 59 (of 60) engraved plates - lacking plate 52: "Two specimens of Siren, or Mud Iguana from South Carolina."… Nice enough set in recent quarter green morocco over green cloth sides, gilt lettering direct on spines. Bookplate of James Mead, Curator Emeritus of Marine Mammals at the Smithsonian. Hunter (1728-1793) was an eminent anatomist and surgeon whose work on gun-shot wounds and inflammation brought him early prominence.
