Cloth. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very good to near fine copy of the first UK edition of the 10th Judge Dee novel in very good wrap. A complicated set of mysteries set in the capital city which is beset by plague and under curfew. Judge Dee lived in Tang dynasty China and was fame…d as solver of crimes during his period as a District Magistrate, and as a statesman after his promotion to the Imperial Court. The lilac cloth binding has gilt titles to the spine and is very clean and sound. There is slight pulling to the top spine end and a very tiny corner tip crease to the top corner of the front board. The endpapers are decorated with a willow pattern pot design in blue. There are old brown sellotape marks at the corners of both sets of free endpapers. The contents, with 15 black and white illustrations by Van Gulik, are in fine clean condition. There are a few spots on the foredge and top page edge visible when the book is closed. The wrap, illustrated by Paul Castell, is complete and clean and priced at 15/- on the front flap. It is in a removable protective wrap. The bottom part of the spine is faded and there are a couple of small spots of surface loss - near the bottom of the back panel and at the bottom edge of the spine. There is light rubbing to the fold edges. The inside of the jacket has some spotting. Robert Van Gulik (ilustrador).

First American edition, 8vo, pp. [8], 183, [1]; pictorial endpapers, fine copy in a fine dust jacket. "Printing and publishing The Haunted Monastery, The Red Pavilion, and The Lacquer Screen in Kuala Lumpur had been a most interesting and instructive experience, and also financially satisfying. But when these books proved so pop…ular that orders came in for hundreds of copies, my printer and I realized that this undertaking was growing too big for us to handle. I came into contact with William Heinemann Ltd. of London, and they undertook to republish the three novels, and also The Emperor's Pearl and Murder in Canton, bringing out two novels each succeeding year, while Scribners would bring out the American editions. Heinemann told me they saw a good market for more than the five volumes of the New Series and suggested I write some more novels to be published before the final story, Murder in Canton. After being transferred from Malaya to The Hague as Director of Research in our Foreign Office, I wrote The Willow Pattern, which first appeared in Dutch as a serial in the daily newspaper De Telegraaf. It was printed by Heinemann in substantially the same form as my manuscript. I attach to the manuscript my correspondence with Mr. Schaank, a former Director of Waterworks, about the course objects will take in a current situation, and I consulted my friend Dr. Haneveld about the symptoms of the plague. I also conducted a study of blue and white porcelain, the results of which I summarized in my postscript to this novel" (Van Gulik). Evers, p. 57.

London: Heinemann. 1965. 8vo. Publisher's teal cloth, lettered in dark blue to spine with small illustration to upper board, dark blue illustrated endpapers, in the illustrated dust jacket; pp. [8], 184, with 15 woodblock-style illustrations by the author; light sunning to jacket spine with very faint staining to rear, minimal w…ear to edges, mild toning to edges of text block; near fine.First UK edition, exquisitely illustrated by the author.Drawing on the conventions of traditional Chinese detective fiction, Van Gulik weaves three apparently unrelated crimes: the death of a wealthy merchant found in his study, a gruesome discovery at the foot of a staircase, and the brutal murder of a young woman. As the investigation unfolds, Judge Dee uncovers the complex connections binding the cases together. The character of Judge Dee is based on the historical Tang-dynasty magistrate Di Renjie (seventh century). The Willow Pattern is set during the later phase of Dee's career when he is serving as President of the Metropolitan Court, allowing Van Gulik to explore both judicial intrigue and court politics.First published in Dutch as a serial in De Telegraaf throughout 1964, the English and American editions followed in 1965.Evers, p. 57.
