He is best known for his theories about the managerial revolution, in which he posited that societies, particularly in the West, were moving away from traditional capitalism to a new form of organization where technocrats, bureaucrats, and other specialists hold the power. This theory was presented in his book "The Managerial Revolution" published in 1941. Burnham started his career as a committed Marxist and was a member of the American Trotskyist movement in the 1930s. However, he later broke with Marxism and became a leading conservative thinker, writing frequently for the National Review, a conservative magazine founded by William F. Buckley Jr. In addition to "The Managerial Revolution," Burnham wrote several other influential books, including "The Machiavellians: Defenders of Freedom," in which he argued that only a political system acknowledging the reality of human self-interest could build a sustainable, free society, and "Suicide of the West," which presented a pessimistic view of the cultural trajectory of Western civilization. Burnham's ideas have had a lasting impact on conservative thought, and his theories about the managerial state have been influential in both political science and sociology.
