He gained great admiration in the publishing world for the magnificent series of global studies which were published, starting in 1923. Each volume in the series focused on a country or a region, and presented, not just exemplary texts, but, also, stunning photography of the locales, peoples, architecture, and landscapes. This promotional has critical testimonials praising the series, with texts written in German, French Italian, and English. "PRESSESTIMMEN über die große Kosmographie ORBIS TERRARUM Die Länder der Erde im Bild". The series "Orbis Terrarum" was started in 1923 with a volume on Greece ("Griechenland" von Hanns Holdt und Hugo von Hoffmansthal) . According to the English section, the latest volumes in the series - just before this flyer comprised "Deutscheland", Skandinavien", "Nordafrika", and"die ewige Stadt" (Rome) - were issued circa 1926. Here are some excerpts from the English testimonial : "No praise can be too high for the magnificent books which Wasmuth has been publishing under the collective title of "Orbis Terrarum". The first volume was "Greece" , a masterpiece of photography, and the volumes that have followed it are fully equal to the first. These books are all in fine large quarto format, giving the opportunity of using large pictures, in contrast to the small and ignoble formats used by most English and American publishers of illustrated works. The reproduction of the photographs by the offset process is perfection itself. The original plate could give no finer or clearer copies. The rich, smouldering browns of these pictures is a treat to the eye. But the peculiar charm and beauty of these plates is not only in the reproduction, but in the actual taking of the photographs themselves. With few exceptions they are the work of masters, and reveal unknown and dramatic aspects even of familiar things and scenes." PHYSICAL DETAILS : This is a single buff colored sheet folded three times. The presenting page measures 5 1/2" x 8 1/4", and folds out (or expands), accordion style, to four sections, each one printed on both sides, producing 4 facets, or 8 pages of text. One page acts as an order sheet. CONDITION -- NEAR FINE -- There is one tiny triangular piece missing from the bottom corner of the final section. There, as far as I can discern 3 microscopic pinpricks to the front section - these may well have been a condition of the paper as it was being printed. It is a very nice piece of bibliographic ephemera. I doubt that many of these have survived. The books themselves, which are advertised, grace fine libraries around the world.
