Not too certain of age, but as none of the pictures include motor vehicles, we can only guess at late 1800's. There is a picture of the Duke of Wellington Monument, so it must be after 1852? Añadir al carritoHardcover. folio, [ii], 36p., plus 36 coloured aquatint plates, interleaved, in later nineteenth-century half dark brown morocco, gilt ruled raised bands, gilt ruled on the boards, cloth boards, top edge gilt, small armorial bookplate of Zenas Crane, browning and some spotting on the margins; one plate has a few heavy spots in lower margin; usual offsetting of plates to text; some slight wear marks on the boards, a very good attractive complete copy. (cgc) Abbey, Travel, 198; Blackmer 1814; Ibrahim-Hilmy 11: 335; Lipperheide 570; Tooley 511; R"hricht 148. This work is based on Willyams' earlier work, "A Voyage up the Mediterranean in His Majesty's Ship the Swiftsure", (1802) and published posthumously. Thirty-two of the plates have been "re-aquatinted and re-etched in some passages, presumably owing to wear. " These are signed (Willyams/Stadler). Three of these signed plates (nos. 9, 17 and 26 in Abbey) are not listed in the plate-list, although "they should always be present. " There are, in addition, four plates that were not in the earlier edition, published by Hearne. All of the plates are on thick paper and, where a watermark is discernible, it reads "Turkey Mill 1822"; the interleaves, also thick paper, are watermarked "J. Whatman. " Willyams served as chaplain to the Royal Navy in the squadron led by Horatio Nelson and took part in the battle of the Nile in 1798. He wrote and illustrated several books, including one on the West Indies, but his most famous one was his 1802 account of this battle, from which this work derives. Zenas Crane (bookplate) was a founder of Crane Paper Company of Dalton, Massachusetts and his namesake, to whom in all likelihood this book belonged, was a well-known philanthropist in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. A notation on the front paste-down reads: "Bought in London 1894. " London, John Hearne, 1822. In-folio, burgundy half-morocco with corners, spine with ornate ribbing (Modern Rel.). Very nice album of 36 watercolor plates, drawn by C. Willyams and engraved by J. C. Stadler, legends in English. The descriptive texts are given in French and English and were posthumously based on the work by Willyams, naval chaplain, published in 1802 under the title A Voyage up the Mediterranean in His Majesty s Ship the Swiftsure adorned with 43 boards ; 32 of these 43 plates have been reworked for this new title, with 4 new engravings. Some foxing, loaded onto white pages. Books.

Añadir al carritoHalf Morocco over Boards. Condición: Good Plus. Folio. 32 pp. with 31 hand-colored aquatint plates. Both Abbey Travel 198 and Tooley 511 give the plate number as 36 but the letterpress matches the 31 plate number in this copy and there are absolutely no signs of anything removed, and so surely this copy was issued as such. A few of the plates are exciting, such as the frontis with the procession depicted or scenes of old Cairo, and none are without merit. The binding is contemporary, and although quite scuffed, especially the boards, and there is wear along the joints, well worth preserving. Some scattered foxing and soiling, the title bearing the brunt of such as is here, and there is a minor tear/chip on the upper title page as well. Measures 16 by 12 inches, 40 by 30 cm.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Quarto album (ca. 27,5x19 cm). 26 card stock leaves (1 blank). With 98 mounted original gelatin silver photographs, each ca. 8x11,5 cm (3 ½ x 4 ½ in). Most photos with captions. Period green cloth album with the silver-tooled generic title "Photographs" on the front board; with compiler's black ink manuscript title on top of the frond board and the spine; with compiler's period ink inscription on the front free endpaper: "Margot Alice Postlewaite views taken on out two months trip on the Prinzessin Victoria Luise. Leaving New York Wednesday, March 12th 1902." Spine with slight wear, several photos with mild silvering, but overall a very good album with strong photographs. Historically interesting album of lively vernacular photos taken by Margaret Postlewaite, a family member of noted American Episcopal missionaries of St. Paul (MN) & St. Louis (MO), during her voyage from New York to the Mediterranean and Black Seas in the spring of 1902. Margaret and her travel companions (including her stepmother) left New York on board the luxurious cruise ship "Prinzessin Victoria Louise" and sailed to Gibraltar with a stopover in Madeira. In the Mediterranean, they visited Nice and Palermo and then, via the Bosphorus Strait, went to the Black Sea. They traveled to Constantinople, Trebizond, and Batoum, reached Tiflis by train, and resumed their journey by the ship to Sebastopol, Yalta, and Odessa. On the way back, they stopped in Algiers, Genoa, and Contrexéville. Margaret Alice Postlewaite (ca. 1871-1955) was the granddaughter of the Rev. Ezekiel Gilbert Gear, a pioneer Christian missionary of Minnesota. She "was active in women's parish work when her husband [the Rev. Henry W. Mizner] was priest-in-charge, and later rector, of St. Stephen's House, St. Louis. Mo., from 1901 to 1926. She was also active in church work at the American pro-cathedral in Paris, where she lived from 1927 to 1939, and at St. Luke's Chapel, Trinity Parish., N.Y." (The Living Church. May 1, 1955. P. 19.) The album contains ninety-eight photographs with most images documenting the Black Sea voyage. Ten excellent photos of Constantinople feature general views of the city, harbor, and local landmarks (the Theodosian Walls, Camondo Stairs, and Beylerbey Palace). Several candid urban scenes show merchants selling fruits in a local bazaar and crowds gathering at the harbor of Constantinople. The "Ottoman series" also includes ten lively photos of Trebizond, depicting its coastal view and local dancers enthusiastically engaging in the Anatolian war dance with knives. Ten rare photos of Tiflis show an openwork entrance to the luxury Hotel D'oriental (where the travelers stayed), a procession of men in chokhas on Golovinski Avenue (now Rustaveli), and locals in traditional attire (with a beggar woman, likely a Muslim, sitting nearby). Especially interesting are over twelve images of Sebastopol, depicting its harbor, local landmarks (Memorial to the Charge of the Light Brigade, Monument to Kornilov, St. George monastery, Church of the Resurrection, the Baidar Gate), and cheerful, vibrant scenes of the voyagers laughing, drinking & "taking luncheon on the top of Baidar Gate." The rest of the Black Sea photos mostly depict Yalta (harbor & Alexander Nevsky Cathedral) and the crowded dock of Odessa. The album also includes about thirty-five scenes of Funchal ("the bullock sledge in which we saw Funchal," etc.), Gibraltar (coastal views), Palermo (Palermo Cathedral, Porta Nuova, the Benedictine Cloister, etc.), Genoa (Statue of Christopher Columbus), Algiers (a street scene with two local boys), Contrexéville ("the old lace woman & her chicken"), and Nice (the Villefranche harbor, view from the Hotel des Anglaise, where the travelers stayed, etc.). One interesting image at the rear shows the traveling party "on board the Princess Victoria Louise" posing for a photo (with names indicated). Overall, a historically interesting album illustrating a voyage to the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

Mild rubbing on edges of covers and spine; mounts slightly waved, several mounts with foxing; a few photos mildly faded, but overall a very good album of strong interesting photos. A collection of 192 photographs showing the military career of Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Cosens, who served with the British Army between 1886 and 1911, and once again during World War I. "Lieutenant-Colonel Cosens entered the South Staffordshire Regiment on 30th June 1886. He served with his regiment at home and in [British] India and Burma [Myanmar]. He was promoted Captain on 1st August 1893, and Major on 7th July 1906. He served with the 1st Battalion for a short time during the South African War, and was awarded the Queen's South African Medal. He retired from the Army in 1911. On the outbreak of the Great War he was recalled, and served continuously throughout that war as transport officer at Portsmouth and Avonmouth. Colonel Cosens was a great sportsman, and an excellent game shot. He took a great delight in teaching young officers to be good sportsmen." (Lichfield Mercury (Staffordshire, England), 9 April 1943, p. 7). Over 40 photographs are of Cosens' military career. Over half are group portraits and military events in Gibraltar, India, Egypt, and Burma, including a "presentation of colours" in Gibraltar, reviews in Allahabad (Prayagraj, India) and Alexandria, the Alexandria encampment, and the wedding of a fellow officer in 80th Regiment in Madras (Chennai, India). The group portraits show entire regiments, which are identified in the captions ("80th Regt.," "38th Regt.," "5th Brigade Welsh Division Royal Artillery," etc.), and officers of those regiments, some of whom are identified in the captions ("Capt. Spencer," "Wreford Brown," "Crofton," etc.). One photograph, captioned "80th Regt. Allahabad," has an overlay identifying those in the portrait, including the compiler (and his dog). The other photographs show the locations where he was stationed, showing environs of Gibraltar, including the military barracks, a panorama of the harbour, and the "Governor's cottage"; and Egypt, including Alexandria, Port Said, the Suez Canal, Cairo, and the Great Pyramids and Great Sphinx of Giza. There are also two photographs of Ladakh (India) and several of Malta. Other photographs in the album are from after Cosens' retirement in 1911. Of note are several photographs showing the estate in which he lived, Plas Hendre, in Aberystwyth, Wales, and two photographs from the unveiling of the statue for Thomas Charles Edwards, the first Principal of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, in 1922. David Lloyd George (1863-1945), Welsh politician and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1916-1922), is photographed speaking at the unveiling. The other photographs show trips taken by Cosens to Italy and the Canary Islands, and portraits of his friends and family, including, among others, Cosens' brother John Dickson Cosens (1867-1942) and his brother's wife Eadith Greens. Overall, an interesting collection of photographs showing Cosens' military career in the British Army at the turn of the century.
