This is studied rebuke by Howard Zinn (ex-bombardier, historian, civil rights activist) to America's continued military presence in what he calls "a theatre of the absurd." The prince of that presence (primarily in lives, but also in national honor and in money needed to build America's own "Great Society" and help with the economic development of Southeast Asia) is calculated, weighed, and found indefensible. But Zinn does not merely carp about national policy. In an eloquent concluding chapter, he turns speechwriter and prepares an address which he proposes that President Johnson deliver--announcing to the world our unilateral military withdrawal from the war in Vietnam and articulating the gains from such an announcement. To those who argue that our international reputation would suffer, that there is an analogy with Munich, or that we must contain communism or lose the game of dominoes--the logic of withdrawal as Zinn develops it is both forthright and persuasive. Howard Zinn (August 24, 1922 January 27, 2010) was an American historian and a veteran of World War II. He was chair of the history and social sciences department at Spelman College, and a political science professor at Boston University. Zinn wrote more than 20 books, including his best-selling and influential A People's History of the United States in 1980. He wrote extensively about the civil rights movement, the anti-war movement and labor history of the United States. His memoir, You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train, was also the title of a 2004 documentary about Zinn's life and work. Derived from a Kirkus review: Vietnam "has become a theatre of the absurd, " Howard Zinn asserts in a book as lucidly as any to appear on the subject. "We in America still cling to the romance of war that is not really war, but Terry and the Pirates, Defending the Free World, or LBJ in a Green Beret."
