Though his dates are uncertain, the rhetorician and historian Quintus Curtius Rufus most likely wrote his Life of Alexander the Great during the reign of Claudius in the middle of the first century C.E.Modeled on the classic style of Livy, perhaps verging toward parody, this emotional portrayal of Alexander is marked by vivid detail, bold speeches and "reflects the Peripatetic view of a tyrant favored by Fortune" (Oxford Classical Dictionary). Only eight of Curtius's 10 books have been passed down from antiquity, leaving gaps. As a historian, Curtius is not read for accuracy: The author himself cheerfully admits he omits nothing his authorities tell him, preferring to entertain the reader with a lively narrative over critical objectivism. .
