Vol II- rear board is OFF/DETACHED, rear outer spine is solit 17cm up ffrom bottom & slightly across & gaping a little, chips/wear to spine-ends, rubbing to spine-surface, wear through to card at corners. Blotching to end-papers with a crease & to preliminaries. Rear boards is much blanched in colour, red spot effect page-edges with light marks. Page-edges fall together smartly and binding feels strong. Text is very clean. Vol I - wear through to card at corners, rear top corner has two 2cm tears, rubbing to spine surface, some splitting to bottom outer front hinge with a 1cm chip. Inner front hinge ia a little cracked but no wobble, blotching/browning to preliminaries & water mark to rear end-paper. Page-edges fall together well & binding feels strong. Text has a light wave. Text is very clean & in nice condition. Both volumes have black title labels to rubbed cross-banded spine with light gilt lines. Volume I has a b/w frontispiece of the author, Vol II has no frontispiece & looks never to have had one. Title pages are dated 1849, bioth the ornamentel title-pages preceeding these are dated 1848.

There is some light edge foxing throughout with some few pages more extensively affected; the texts are otherwise clean.

First edition leather bound hardback; 20 pages + A-5s4, complete with the final advert leaf. The front board is missing, the rear hinge is weak and there are losses to the spine; the text itself is well bound together. There is some light foxing and some ink marks in a few places in the text.

Frontispiece sl. creased at fore-edge, some occasional light spotting, the odd crease & small marginal tear. A nice clean copy. Handsomely rebound in half speckled calf, raised bands, red morocco label. Alston V 173 noting that 'the revisions and additions are extensive enough to warrant this being regarded as a new work'; ESTC T148730. Scarce in commerce; only three copies have appeared at auction since 1980. Published in the same year as the 16th 8vo edition of Bailey's Universal Etymological English Dictionary, this is known as the Scott-Bailey edition, published in folio. As well as borrowing heavily from Bailey (who had died in 1742), Scott's dictionary was also nearly identical in style to Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language published in the same year. Having published his Plan of a Dictionary in 1747 Johnson had openly shared his ideas from which Scott duly copied. Scott in fact, recognises Johnson's influence in the preface to this work: 'What remains is, to do justice to some previous writers, from whom we have taken (as is not unusual in works of this sort) many things. In particular to the elaborate Mr. Johnson, for the different acceptation of words in English writers.'.

In 1721, Bailey published the first first monolingual English dictionaries to focus on defining words in common usage, rather than just difficult words. Bailey's Dictionarium Britannicum (1730 and 1736) was the primary resource mined by Samuel Johnson for his Dictionary of the English Language (1755). The "Scott-Bailey" or "Bailey-Scott" dictionary, contains relatively slight revisions by Scott, but mostly plagiarizes Johnson's own dictionary. "The attempt of the Bailey proprietors to enter a folio to rival Johnson's great Dictionary remained alive through 1772, three years after Scott's death." See Starnes & Noyes, chapt.
