Hardback. Condición: Good. A timeless and majestic portrait of Africa by renowned writer Peter Matthiessen (1927-2014), author of the National Book Award-winning The Snow Leopard and the new novel In Paradise A finalist for the National Book Award when it was released in 1972, this vivid portrait of East Africa remains as fresh and revelatory now as on the day it was first published. Peter Matthiessen exquisitely combines nature and travel writing to portray the sights, scenes, and people he observed firsthand in several trips over the course of a dozen years. From the daily lives of wild herdsmen and the drama of predator kills to the field biologists investigating wild creatures and the anthropologists seeking humanity's origins in the rift valley, The Tree Where Man Was Born is a classic of journalistic observation. This Penguin Classics edition features an introduction by groundbreaking British primatologist Jane Goodall. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. 2016 Purple Dragonfly Book Awards: 2nd Place for Children's Nonfiction. The Old Man and The Tree is the tale of two unlikely friends: a young man named Fred and a growing maple tree. When Fred purchases a home with a fledgling tree in his backyard, all he wants is some shade, but what develops is a bond between man and nature and true friendship. As the pair ages together, like the seasons, their relationship goes through changes as well. Based on author Richard Schlatter's own experience, The Old Man and The Tree teaches the important lessons of loyalty and respect as they apply to friends, nature, and oneself. The Old Man and the Tree is an inspirational story, based on the author's real life experiences, which appeals to all ages. A quotation by Nelson Henderson underlies the message of The Old Man and the Tree: The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit. Fred began his lifelong friendship with a young maple tree on Applewood Lane when he was a young man. He liked the tree growing in his back yard, but wished it would grow bigger so it could provide more shade. Gradually the years went by, the tree grew, and Fred's appreciation of his friendship with the tree grew also. The two friends grew old together. As Fred aged, he noticed that the aging maple tree had some bad habits, such as shedding helicopter seeds and leaves that he had to clean up. This work grew harder for Fred as he grew older, and finally he told the tree he would have to hire a man to cut the tree down, painful though this was to him. In the end there was only the stump, and Fred was ill with missing his friend, the old maple tree, wishing it could come back. Finally Fred found a helicopter seed from the old tree, planted it in a pot, and transplanted it in the back yard near where the old maple tree had stood. He hoped someday others would enjoy the growing tree's shade, colorful leaves, and sweet songs of birds in its branches. Fred's message to all readers is to make a promise: I promise to never cut down my friends, because saying or doing the wrong thing can end a friendship forever. The Old Man and the Tree has generation-spanning appeal, with its delicate realistic illustrations and heartfelt wisdom. --Children's Bookwatch: September 2015.…

Hardback. Condición: Very Good. As Houston's beloved KPRC weatherman for more than 20 years, Frank Billingsley seems like a relative to many people. His optimistic presence comes into their homes and reassures that even the gloomiest of rainclouds probably has a silver lining. He has such a way with people that it is obvious that he comes by his sunny, outgoing demeanor naturally. Billingsley always wondered if he got his personality, his bright blue eyes, or his love of people from his mother or his father. But he was adopted, so he never knew. Swabbed & Found is the fascinating story of how he combined cutting-edge DNA tests and genealogical programs in combination with his investigative skills to put the pieces of his family tree in order. Along the way he discovered that people are not always who they seem, or even who they think they are. Each time he would think that he had come to a dead end, he found himself helped by a new friend or a newly discovered relative, until finally, he was able to find the family he had wondered about for his whole life. The science of genealogy is booming, and in his typical open fashion, Billingsley puts a human face on it. His story shows that who we are is not necessarily who gave us our eye color, but who we love. Knowing our genealogical background is important, but wielding that information with care and compassion is a vital part of this new science. Providing a clear road map of how the DNA discovery process works, resources, and explanations of just what second cousin-once-removed really means, as well as insight on life as a gay public figure in the South, this generous book makes it clear why Billingsley has found such a home in Houston's heart. Anyone who has ever wondered about missing branches on their family tree, wanted to know more about their heritage, or wanted to understand, once and for all, that we are all really one big family, will find Swabbed & Found enlightening and engaging. Award Finalist in the LGBTQ: Non-Fiction category of the 2017 Best Book Awards. (Jeffrey Keen, American Book Fest).…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The White Man in the Tree is a comedy of cultural misunderstandings set in the Caribbean, New York, and Paris, a novella and eight stories about people who, because of their differences, misjudge each other. Whether it is a sophisticated European filmmaker, an ambitious young black Haitian woman, a promising politician obsessed with women's feet, or a fish-out-of-water rabbi in search of a kosher chicken in Curaçao, each of Kurlansky's characters engages us with impulses and interactions that are by turns comic, insightful, and poignant. The White Man in the Tree is an affectionate portrait of a unique society, where Europe, America, Africa, and Asia meet Latin America.…
