Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. Book Condition, Fine: Very light signs of shelf wear across the dust jacket, bumping to its corners, slightest wear to its edges, minute tears at spine's corners. Otherwise excellent, artwork and lettering bright and vibrant. Creasing and slight curling to corners of publisher's original binding, a crease down its spine. Some spotting across the text block, particularly top edge, but mostly clean with crisp edges. Creased endpaper page, faint foxing through endpapers, otherwise pages are clean and tidy. Book remains tightly bound. First edition, published by Faber & Faber. A scarce and increasingly sought-after title, particularly when retaining its original dust jacket. Early Faber first editions from this period were produced in relatively modest print runs, and survival in complete, well-preserved condition is uncommon. Ex Libris (Peter Stevinson Watson). The Trap is a tense and atmospheric novel that explores the pressures and uncertainties of wartime Europe, combining tightly controlled suspense with psychological insight. Billany crafts a narrative driven by danger, moral complexity, and shifting loyalties, resulting in a compelling work of mid-century British fiction.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Hardback near fine, boards minor shelf wear, no annotations, dust jacket, unclipped, minor shelf/edge wear. Publisher: Faber and Faber, London, 1950, second impression. Dan Billany's The Trap, first published in 1950, still stands - in the opinion of M.R.D. Foot - as 'one of the most powerful English novels to come out of the [Second World War].' It echoes the wartime experiences of its author, who is believed to have died in 1943 while on the run from an Italian POW camp, but not before entrusting the manuscripts of The Trap to safekeeping. The book's narrator, army lieutenant Michael Carr, tells of his early years in Cornwall, of the girl he met and loved there, and of the hard times her family endured between the wars. These troubles and joys give way to the tragedy of war, and the book's narrative becomes one of comradeship, suspense and fighting in the North African desert. 'The Trap is an outstanding novel by a writer of natural genius. written with great force and honesty. profoundly impressive.' Times Literary Supplement.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fair. The Trap by Dan Billany, Hardcover, UK Edition, 2nd Impression (1950). Book in very good condition, in an acceptable dust jacket, with the corner clipped but the price still shown (12s. 6d. net). The book has bumping to the spine ends and a spine lean, with ageing internally and to the page edges. The dust jacket shows wear and ageing, with nicks, tears and losses to the extremities. The dust jacket is now encased in a removable plastic sleeve. (See pictures). The author was a Prisoner of War of the Germans in World War II, captured in Africa and transferred to a POW Camp in Southern Italy. After the Italian capitulation in September 1943, he was released, and in December of that year was in Mantua. Manuscripts of this book were written in Italian exercise books, and left in the care of a friendly Italian farmer, who sent them to Billany's parents when the war was over. Billany was mortally wounded when trying to end the activities of an informer in the camp, and was buried near Fermo in 1945. The book was considered: 'Almost the only novel about the war of real literary power. written as a prisoner of war. the material is still raw'.

The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Ink inscription to the front free end paper. Publisher's cream cloth lettered in gilt to spine, illustrative dust-jacket, priced at 10s. 6d. to front and back flap. Toning and spotting to edges of textblock, rolling to spine, bumping to corners, dust-jacket has wear to edges, front flap has price crossed out in heavy pencil. Very good. In 1942, Billany was taken as a prisoner of war in Southern Italy. However, after Italian capitulation in 1943, he was released. The manuscripts of The Trap were written on old Italian exercise books which were stitched together. This writing was left in the care of a farmer, and was eventually sent to Billany's parents once the war was over. This story, has not been revised by Faber and Faber and has been published as identical to the manuscript as they believe 'that [Billany's] voice must be heard'. The Trap follows the story of a young man living in Cornwall during the turbulent inter-war period.
