Nato a Breslavia, all'epoca parte della monarchia asburgica, fu professore all'Università di Wittenberg ed è celebre per la sua teoria degli "atoma corpuscula" seconda la quale ogni corpo rappresenta il risultato dell'aggregazione di molecole costituite da atomi originari, tanto da essere considerato come uno dei primi ad intuire le basi della teoria atomica. Nello specifico, forma un ponte intermedio tra le opere di Geber e i corpuscularisti più conosciuti come Robert Boyle che sembra che da Sennert, mutuò alcune idee sperimentali. Le teorie di Sennert erano basate su prove esperienziali e sperimentali che aveva raccolto sia dai resoconti dei testimoni oculari che dalla sua esperienza di laboratorio. Oltre a dare uno dei primi resoconti sulla scarlattina, Sennert ha dato un notevole contributo anche conoscenza dello scorbuto, della dissenteria e dell'alcolismo. Pur essendo un abile medico fu un credente assertore della veridicità della stregoneria. Seppur nei primi anni di insegnamento si rifece alle teorie aristoteliche, si avvicinò ben presto alle teorie alchemiche arrivando ad abbracciare le teorie della trasmutazione alchemica, già intorno al 1610. A Wittenberg fu per sei volte eletto preside di facoltà e le sue opere chimiche ed alchemiche ebbero numerose ristampe. Morì nel 1641 a Wittenberg durante la violenta epidemia di peste che colpì la città. Rif.
