A MIGHTY TASK faces Tom Swift Jr. In his exciting, new project - colonization of the moon. To accomplish this astounding feat, Tom must perfect his latest invention, the matter maker, which will be essential for life on the moon. Not only must this amazing solartron manufacture oxygen and fuel, but also food and other materials in sufficient quantity to support the moon pioneers for some time. From the moment the young scientist-adventurer starts planning for this daring venture, danger and mysterious happenings plague almost every step of his progress. A crushing blow comes when he discovers that one of the solartron's precious secrets has fallen into the hands of an unscrupulous scientific group. Unwilling to admit defeat, Tom and Mr. Swift proceed to their Outpost in Space to conduct crucial tests on the matter maker. Just as success seems assured, the young scientist suffers the most devastating blow of all when his father mysteriously vanishes in the dark void of endless space. Frantic, Tom instigates a search that leads to the farthest planets. As you read this taut, nerve-tingling story of Tom's exploits, you will live every tense moment of his triumphs and electrifying adventures. '.

It is 7-5/8" tall and has 183 numbered pages of text; it is the blue tweed cover of format #1, as per Mattson & Davis's bibliography (Grosset & Dunlap; 7-5/8"; textured composition binding, medium blue with dark blue lettering; plain front except for dark blue illustration of Tom Swift, Jr.'s head in upper right area of front cover, superimposed over a blueprint; pictorial end pages in shades of blue on white, depicting Tom at the window of his flying lab; frontis +8 to +11 full or partial page illustration, all on plain paper. White coated paper dust jacket, pictorial, in colors, different scene for each title; illustration covers front & spine panels; spine contains series logo of Tom's head superimposed over a blueprint with black rectangle below containing "The New Tom Swift Adventures" and the title number enclosed in a white or gray diamond). This book is square, very clean, free of corner bumps and edge dings; the head and heel of the spine are also free of bumps. The bottom edges and corners have virtually no wear. The book lists only the first 13 Swift Jr. titles on the back of the half-title page; there is no other list in the book. This book could almost pass for new. This NF quality jacket is very clean and the colors on the front panel and spine are not damaged or faded. It has a small chip at the top front corner and tiny ones at the head of the spine; and there is a scrape that removes some of the color along about half the length of the spine. This jacket is not price-clipped. There is no tape on this jacket. The rear flap advertises the first 13 titles of this series.
