From the introduction: "The following 118 lots come from the stock-in-trade of Sir Tobias Rodgers, who died at the age of 56 earlier this year. Rodgers cut a distinctive figure in the world of rare books. His own laconic remark, that he thought of himself as 'more of a boulevardier than a book-seller' belied the seriousness with which he pursued his metier. Some of these books bear the distinctive shelf-mark of the Cullen House Library. " Among the highlights noted were the following: "Creceilius's Collectanea de originemonasticorum ordinum ordine, Frankfurt, 1614, John Donne's Copy, (lot 179); Ferrerrio's Palazzi di Roma, Rome, 1665, (lot 32), and other books on Rome, (including lots 85 and 152 to 156); Guicciardini's Description de touts les Pays-Bas, Amsterdam, 1625, (lot 34); Lewin's The Papilios of Great Britain, 1795, (lot 54); Loggan's Oxonia lllustrata, Oxford, 1675, (lot 56); Porterfield's A Treatise on the Eye, Edinburgh, 1795, (lot 79); Silva's Dell'Arte di Giardini Inglesi, Milan, 1801, (lot 93); Walker's The Costume of Yorkshire, 1814, (lot 109); St. Augustine's De Civitate Dei, Venice, 1486, (lot 119); St. Bernard's Sermones, [Speir, c.1481], (lot 121); Ville's Les Fortifications, Lyon, 1628, (lot 145), and other militaria; a good collection of ceremonial and fête books, (lots 180-201); Schreiber's Buchsemaister-Discurs, Brieg, 1656, (lot 203); books on calligraphy, (lots 214-224); Horst's Theatrum Machinarum Universale, 2 vol., Amsterdam, 1774, (lot 237); Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, Dublin, 1776, first Dublin edition, (lot 248); Magna Carta Regis Johannis, printed in gold on vellum, 1816, (lot 263); letters of Darwin, (lot 272), T.S.
